Everyday English You Actually Need in Canada (Appointments, School, Banking)

These are short, practical phrases + mini scripts you can use right away. Keep it simple, be polite, and confirm details (“So it’s Tuesday at 3 p.m., right?”).

1) Appointments (doctor, clinic, services)

Useful phrases

  • “Hi, I’d like to book an appointment.”

  • “Do you have anything available this week?”

  • “Morning/afternoon works for me.”

  • “I’m a new patient.”

  • “Can you confirm the date, time, and address?”

  • “Could you repeat that, please?” / “Could you speak slower?”


Mini script (booking)
You: Hi, I’d like to book an appointment.
Staff: What is it for?
You: A check-up. I’m a new patient.
Staff: When are you available?
You: Morning is best. Do you have anything this week?
Staff: Thursday at 10 a.m.
You: That works. Can you confirm the address, please?

Mini script (reschedule)
You: Hi, I need to reschedule my appointment.
Staff: What day works for you?
You: Wednesday or Thursday after 3 p.m., please.

2) School (office, teacher, messages)

Useful phrases

Quick absence message (text/email)
“Hello, my child will be absent today because they are sick. Thank you.”

3) Banking (accounts, fees, cards)

Useful phrases

  • “Hi, I’d like to open a bank account.”

  • “What documents do I need?”

  • “Are there monthly fees?”

  • “Can you explain this charge/fee?”

  • “I don’t recognize this transaction.”

  • “How do I send an e-transfer?”


Mini script (opening an account)
You: Hi, I’m new here. I’d like to open a bank account.
Bank: Do you have ID?
You: Yes. What documents do I need?

10-minute practice (do this for 7 days): pick one script → read it twice → replace details (name/date/time) → say it out loud once → record 20 seconds and replay.
