Resume Basics in Canada: A Simple Structure That Works for Most Jobs
A Canadian-style resume is usually clear, simple, and focused on results. You don’t need a fancy design—recruiters prefer something easy to scan in 10–20 seconds.
1) Simple Resume Structure (Copy This Layout)
1) Header
Full name
Phone | Email | City, Province
LinkedIn (optional)
2) Professional Summary (2–3 lines)
Who you are + strengths + what role you want
Example:
“Reliable customer service professional with experience in retail and cash handling. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Seeking a front-line customer service role.”
3) Skills (6–10 bullet points)
Keep them job-relevant. Example:
Customer service
Cash handling / POS
MS Word / Google Docs
Scheduling / coordination
English communication
Teamwork
4) Work Experience (most recent first)
For each job:
Job Title — Company, City
Month/Year – Month/Year
3–5 bullets with actions + results
5) Education
Program/Degree — School, City — Year (or “in progress”)
6) Optional sections
Certifications (First Aid, WHMIS, etc.)
Volunteer experience
Projects (good for students / career changers)
2) What to Include (and What to Remove)
Include
Strong action verbs: “supported, managed, organized, handled, improved”
Numbers when possible: “served 60+ customers per shift”
Keywords from the job posting (skills/tools)
Remove (common in Canada)
Photo
Age, date of birth, marital status
Religion, nationality (unless required for a specific application)
Long paragraphs
Too many pages (aim: 1 page, sometimes 2 if experienced)
3) Tailor Quickly in 10 Minutes
Step 1: Copy 5–8 keywords from the job posting
Example: “customer service, POS, scheduling, teamwork, inventory”
Step 2: Match those keywords in your resume
Add them to Skills
Add them to Work bullets (truthfully)
Step 3: Update your summary to match the job
Example: “Seeking a customer service role” → “Seeking a customer service associate role in retail”
Example bullet upgrade
Before: “Helped customers.”
After: “Assisted customers with product questions and returns, providing friendly service in a fast-paced store.”
Final tip: Save a “master resume” and make a copy for each job. Rename it clearly:
