OSAP 101: How to Apply Step-by-Step (Documents, Deadlines, Common Errors)
1) Before you apply: get your information ready
To apply, you’ll first register for an OSAP account, and you’ll need your Social Insurance Number (SIN) to create it.
Have these items ready so you don’t get stuck halfway:
School + program details (what you’re studying, where, and when)
Your tax information (from your income tax return)
A simple plan for document uploads (save files clearly named as PDFs/JPGs)
Tip: OSAP says the application often takes under 15 minutes, and you can start and come back later.
2) Apply online: submit by the right deadline
After you register, complete and submit your OSAP application by the deadline based on your study type:
Full-time students: submit no later than 60 days before the end of your study period
Part-time students (21+ weeks): submit no later than 60 days before the end
Part-time students (20 weeks or less): submit no later than 40 days before the end
Micro-credential programs: submit no later than the end of your study period
After submitting, you’ll receive an estimate of how much funding you may be eligible for.
3) After you apply: documents + MSFAA + avoid common mistakes
Submit required documents on time
OSAP may ask you for extra documents (your OSAP account will tell you what’s required).
For full-time and part-time students, your financial aid office must receive required documents no later than 40 days before the end of your study period.
For micro-credentials, documents must be received no later than 5 days after your study period ends.
OSAP notes that once you submit your application and they receive all required documents, it typically takes 4–6 weeks to hear back.
Complete your MSFAA (to receive funding)
You may need to complete your MSFAA online through the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC).
For NSLSC registration, you’ll generally need your SIN, date of birth, MSFAA number, and bank account details.
Common errors (and quick fixes)
Missing documents / late uploads → check your OSAP account regularly and upload early.
Wrong deadline → use the “60 days / 40 days” rule (and micro-credential 5-day rule).
Incorrect tax info (yours or parent/spouse) → double-check numbers against tax returns.
Bank details not set up with NSLSC → confirm your direct deposit info is correct.
